Rehabilitation That Only Worsened Our Father’s Condition!
It all started when our father was hospitalized with an infection. After 5-6 days of treatment, his condition significantly improved, and the doctor recommended sending him to a rehabilitation center for recovery, where he would receive physical therapy and proper medical care. We chose a center with a high rating — 5 stars out of 5 — even though it was far from us. We believed that the best place would ensure the best recovery.
However, just two days after his stay in the center, we received a call informing us that our father had fallen out of his wheelchair. The staff knew he was in poor condition and should not have been left unattended. We immediately went to the center and, although we didn’t find any visible physical injuries, we noticed that his left leg and arm had stopped functioning properly, and he was leaning to his left side. We suspected he might have had a stroke and brought it to the staff’s attention. They assured us that they hadn’t noticed anything unusual but promised to have a specialist examine him and send him to the hospital for tests if necessary.
Two more days passed, and no action had been taken. We went back to the office to ask whether a specialist had seen him. We were told that no request had been submitted yet! This caused us great frustration.
Additionally, our father was unable to eat by himself, but the center’s staff would simply leave food by his bedside and later take it away cold and untouched. We found out about this only after several days when we noticed he had barely eaten. We had to start visiting every day to feed him ourselves because the staff was clearly overwhelmed and unable to care for all the patients properly. Staff members were constantly rushing through the hallways, yet nothing seemed to be getting done.
In the same room as our father was another man, separated by a curtain, who emitted a strong unpleasant odor. He, too, could not care for himself, and his hygiene needs were only addressed when we pointed it out. This was shocking. It felt like the patients who couldn’t advocate for themselves were simply left without proper attention and care.
We tried to help our father as much as we could: we put him in a wheelchair and took him around the hallways and outside because no one else would. Despite our efforts, his condition continued to deteriorate. Ultimately, we decided to take him home, as staying at the center only worsened his health.
This was our first experience with rehabilitation centers, and it was a deeply negative one. We had heard from others that such facilities were not suitable for loved ones, but we decided to give it a try. Now we see that this was a huge mistake. Our advice to everyone is this: if your loved one cannot care for themselves, feed themselves, or use the restroom on their own, do not send them to such places. Taking care of them at home will provide them with not only better physical care but also better emotional support. People know when they are not at home, and this realization weighs heavily on them, even if they don’t say so.
As for the reviews of such facilities, do not trust them. They are based on the impressions of visitors who only see the surface. When you visit a loved one, everyone smiles at you, and everything appears wonderful. Then, you receive a message asking you to leave a review, and you write based on what you saw during a brief visit. However, if you spend several days there, you will see the harsh reality of understaffing, indifference, and inadequate care.
We are deeply disappointed in this rehabilitation center and will never recommend it to anyone. If you truly love and value your loved one, a rehabilitation center is not the place for them.
From the past, I can really see an improvement in every aspect. Well done
Please, don’t be fooled by the good rating of this facility. Staff here is really good at being fake 🙂
I never wrote any negative reviews but it was really hard watching my grandpa going through all this:
Sad to say but no one cares about your loved one here. All the stuff seems nice to you when you’re there (nurses, CNAs, physical therapist), they smile to your face, and tell you only what you want to hear, but unfortunately when you’re not there, they don’t do anything.
On his second day of being there my grandpa fell from a wheelchair AT THE NURSE STATION where they said they “would watch him closer” because he was trying to get out of the bed all the time.
We had to be there EVERY SINGLE DAY (twice a day) with my grandpa to make sure he ate (because they didn’t feed him and he couldn’t eat on his own). To make sure they did physical therapy with him because that was the main reason of him being at the rehab facility , which they never did, every day it was “evaluation day”. And to make sure they changed his diaper.
When my RN sister came to visit she checked his diaper and looked like they didn’t change him for 2 days. Everything was super dry to his skin and he had skin breakdown, which is a lawsuit against the facility. Moreover, she had to change him on her own because she was asking for help and they never came.
There was a situation when nurse (David) was in the hallway on his computer and some patient, old grandma, from the other room was calling him 5 times for help saying “excuse me” “excuse me”, he heard everything but he DID NOT CARE to go there and see what that poor grandma needed.
My grandpas roommate that was with him in the room never had any close ones with him and I had to go to the front desk and ask them to change his diaper because there was a smell in the room. 30 mins later they came and changed it. I feel bad for patients there that don’t have close ones with them. If I wouldn’t ask them to change him, he would lie in his poop for who knows how long.
Such a disappointment.
All the staff are very professional and caring. They have been wonderful caring for my mother. We’re very happy she is at Lincoln Meadows Care Center. Thank you all!
