My mother-in-law moved in nearly ten years ago, when she was 95. She is a fiercely independent woman, with a deep love for her chosen profession of teaching and a keen appreciation for art and culture.
She loved living in her assisted living apartment for the first five years. She was delighted by the fact that she could “dine out” at the cafe downstairs, and she loved the programming, whether it be daily exercise classes, lectures, or concerts.
We are Jewish, and love the interfaith community of staff and residents at Merrill Gardens who have joined with Muriel in learning about and celebrating Jewish holidays and traditions, including the High Holidays to Chanukah to Passover.
During COVID, she and we deeply appreciated the care all of the staff took to keep the residents healthy and safe. The Merrill Gardens team was an inspiration for all of us.
When Muriel turned 100, she needed more support and the Merrill Garden team helped her make the transition to the memory care unit. She loved the staff, and dedicated herself to making art every day until she passed away earlier this year at 104.
Our family cannot say enough about the quality, integrity, commitment and caring that the entire Merrill Gardens team provides for their residents and their families. As Muriel would often say, her life at Merrill Gardens was “tip top!”. And it was.

our mother was so fortunate to live at Merrill Gardens, Lafayette. She lived in a beautiful apartment that was just the right size. The staff was so kind, caring and compassionate. They introduced her to other residents and she made amazing friendships with many of them. The meals downstairs were very nutritious and healthy, and the dining room was a wonderful social gathering too. Of course, our mother and her friends never missed the movies In the theatre, or the excursions. There was always organized activities in which she could engage, keeping her mind alert and body active. We cannot say enough great things about the staff who did everything to create a homey, friendly, familiar and safe environment for all. After looking at many options, our mother and we are so clear that Merrill Gardens, Lafayette was by far, the very, very best.
My mom moved here six months ago and I am not exaggerating when I say she’s a lot younger now than when she moved in! She started her day on her 90th birthday this week with an exercise class, as she does everyday. The activities, the food, and every single person that works there including the servers and janitors are some of the nicest people I’ve met anywhere! I dont know how they do their hiring but they’ve got a recipe for finding the most caring, capable people. Merrill Gardens is alwaysa clean, bustling and super-friendly. We couldnt be happier with out choice for Senior living.
Our mom has been at Merrill Gardens for just over 2 years. She’s absolutely thrived there! She is very social so having interaction every day with the staff and the other residents has been life-changing for her, especially since she is no longer driving. She is eating better, exercising every day, and we couldn’t be happier that she found this new home.
We moved here in August of 2023 and are fortunate to have a beautiful 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment.Even though we are independent, we knew we would be needing help eventually and wanted to decide ourselves where and when to move. Merrill Gardens is a lovey place to live. The building and grounds are beautiful, but it is the people who make a difference. The office and desk staff are always helpful and thoughtful. We wondered about the food and it has been amazing. The Chef (Max) provides an incredible assortment of choices each day and the variety of cuisines has been great. His staff have been nothing but professional and friendly.
Many daily activities from exercise to games, lots of live music, a library and a wonderful activities director.
Lafayette was already our home but if you are moving from outside our beautiful town, it is the best.
We are grateful to be living in Merrill Gardens.
