As the trustee of a special needs trust for a disabled individual in New York, living in Texas presented unique challenges. Right at Home – What can I say. I called Right at Home on Columbus Day to find out about an aide for my mom. I knew it was a holiday and didn’t expect to get an answer until the next day. 45 minutes later, I was contacted and had a lengthy conversation with Mary. I told her our needs, that mom was in hospice care and was going to be staying at home for however long. She worked effortlessly to get someone to care for mom during the day. That was when AnnMarie S. came into our lives. She was caring and compassionate and had a lot of experience. After about 8 days, we realized that mom needed 24 hour care. I again spoke with Mary and Nikita, who were looking to fill the hours each day. In a very short amount of time, mom had four other aides to fill the hours needed, and Caroline L., Elizabeth A., Sondra N., and Jenise R. came into our lives. I was able to meet each one and was overcome by each person’s caring and compassion and ability to touch my mom in their own special way. I was concerned because being able to interact with an elderly person who does not know these people and who would be caring for mom’s every need, I was unsure how she would react. These were very special ladies who mom was able to trust and allow them to care for her, all with dignity and respect. They were all very spiritual, with us, and with each other, and I was very moved by this.
My mom passed away four and a half weeks later with Sondra and myself being present. Mom was not alone. Sondra not only emotionally cared for mom but also for me, concerned that I would be okay. She would not leave after her shift until someone came to be with me.
I cannot say enough about Right at Home. They provided mom and our family with peace of mind, knowing that mom was so well cared for. You have to be a special type of person to care for the sick. Right at Home has these very special people.
