  1. My father is currently a resident of Southern Magnolia Living (SML), a group home-based boutique care facility in a quiet residential neighborhood of Holly Springs. He has been there for over a year now and we would never take him anywhere else! The home is luxurious both inside and out, and is managed and staffed by kind, helpful professionals.

Dad has advanced Parkinsons and started needing more around-the-clock help as his physcal capabilities declined. Before entering SML, we tried out 3 different assisted living facilities over a 2 year period in the greater Raleigh/Cary/Apex area. All of the larger facilities we tried were terrible because they were understaffed and dad was often missed when he needed help. It was very frustrating as they all promised a level of care they could never provide.

SML has been a god-send for our family. The biggest difference is the size of the home and quality of staff. SML has just 6 residents in a beautiful home in Holly Springs. The resident to staff ratio is 3 to 1 (Can’t beat that anywhere). With such a small group everyone knows everyone else and it feels like a second family. The care givers know my dad as well as I do now and therefore make sure he always gets what he needs!

Candy, the owner/manager, is a registered nurse with many years of experience. But more importantly she loves SML and it shows in her staff as well as the residences’ happiness.

Dad getting top quality care has also given me back my life. I trust everyone at SML and know they will do whatever is needed for Dad. This has allowed me to go out of town again with confidence.

  2. We had a very difficult time finding a place where Mom, 96 years old, felt comfortable. We moved her from 6 different facilities. She has now been at Southern Magnolia Living for 1.5 years and we all agree that there is no better place. The house is beautiful and well kept. The rooms are cheerful and comfortable. Candy, the owner/Nurse Manager, takes care of everything. Their staff could not be kinder. Jazz makes every day fun for everyone as she cares for my mother and everyone else.
Southern Magnolia Living is beyond 5 stars.

  3. One week after opening its doors for providing care SML took mom in for what was intended to be 3 weeks of respite care while I travel. Not long into the stay Mom asked about making SML her permanent home. It made sense since Mom was turning 91 in a couple of months and her ambulating needs had increased, beyond what I could provide. The family’s biggest concern with Mom living with us was falling, especially in the shower, as primary caregiver and her son showing was a tad bit awkward. The care Mom received at SML was exceptional, not only professional, but loving from both the staff and other residents. We received text message with funny videos and cute photos of Mom having fun with residences and staff. The atmosphere at SML is welcoming, fun and safe. Mom’s a social butterfly and at the same time would dive into her novels. SML provides each resident the opportunity to participate in socializing, read a book, watch movies or enjoy any one of the lovely open concept appointed rooms (Sunroom is Mom’s favorite).
As it happens when you get older in life Mom’s health began to fail. Truly this is where an ‘aging in place’ residence really does it magic. Mom decided hospice was for her and without disturbing her residence by moving her away from her new friends we began the farewell process. Mom’s extended family, children, nieces, grandchildren and even a great grandchild came to visit Mom. Despite the label of hospice Mom passed away peacefully with her children beside her. The compassion, love and support from Candy, Mike and the caregivers is so powerful, you can’t help but feel them as extended family. We are forever grateful for what SML (Candy and Mike) were able to give us to send Mom ‘Home’ the very best way possible. We celebrate her life and rejoice Mom is with all our family and friends who went before us.

  4. Southern Magnolia Living is an exceptional assisted living facility with an excellent staff and owners. SML feels a lot like home with home cooked meals and comfortable furnishings. I know my father is receiving excellent care. We are so happy we found Southern Magnolia Living.

  5. My mother is a charter resident of Southern Magnolia Living (SML), a group home-based boutique care facility in a quiet residential neighborhood. The home is luxurious both inside and out, as well as being managed and staffed by kind, helpful professionals.

Before entering SML, mom had been living on her own. However, it became clear this was no longer possible when she was diagnosed with late-onset Alzheimer’s dementia. We looked at various options for her care and thankfully found SML just a few weeks before it opened.

The accommodations at SML allow mom to have her own room, regular in-home medical care, her medications managed, her vitals checked multiple times per day and opportunities to interact socially with both other residents and staff. The timely professionalism of an SML staff member obtained the outside emergency care mom needed, which likely prevented a much worse outcome when EMS transported her to the ER and ultimately ICU.

I am very grateful to Candy, Mike and the entire SML staff for the outstanding care my mother receives and more importantly the fact that mom feels at home @SML. It’s very difficult for an older person to lose their independence and have to leave a beautiful home they occupied for many years. SML has made this transition a positive experience for my mom!
