  1. I can only speak to the specifics of the memory care unit and I’ll begin with the positives. The facility is nice and the semi-private rooms actually have privacy (they have a room that shares a bathroom but each bedroom space has a barn door to close). Mom had a dorm size refrigerator and sink in her room (not shared). It also came with a chest of drawers, wingback chair, bed and nightstand. My sister had a difficult time trying to find placement for Mom and while we were thankful she found this facility, that quickly turned into frustration about being limited in her options due to finances. While the facility is nice; because it is new, the care level in the memory care unit is horrible. Mom was there for maybe a year and a half before a fall that broke her hip. We knew with it being a new facility there would be bumps in the road as they got things together. However, it was worse than we ever expected….constant staff turnover, staff stealing from the facility (that statement was from the ED) as well as the residents (we experienced this with Mom’s snacks & other resident’s family members told us they experienced the same), staff stealing from the treat baskets that I would bring in for them to share onsite (saw a staff member with my own eyes take out two hands full as she was going home), and staff constantly hiding instead of interacting with residents. Also, the number of falls due to the staff hiding instead of interacting is extremely high. During the time Mom was there they had two executive directors, three care managers in memory care, two activity directors and countless PCA turnover. We brought issues to the executive director multiple times with no changes as well as complained to the Nash county social service contact we had found. The corporate office had them lay off housekeeping in October or November and didn’t reinstate them until the next year. The PCAs were suppose to clean but I can’t tell you how many times I heard “That’s not my job”. Mom wasn’t bathed daily (we did it once a week during our visit), her clothes weren’t washed, and neither was her bed. My sister and I did everything during our visits. The activity director (when they had one) wasn’t given the time or budget to do things with the residents and was expected in the limited hours they could work to also transport residents. I didn’t keep track of the $ amount of donations we made to the facility but it was several hundred, at minimum. When we brought in all the Christmas decorations, one of the staff members in the lobby asked what it was for. When we told them memory care, they actually told us what a waste to put it there. However when we were decorating, almost all of the residents came in, sang Christmas songs and danced around. They had such a good time and it was a story we related over and over when we complained about the lack of care and interaction from the staff. After Mom’s fall and hospital stay, the ED had recommended a facility she used to work for as a good rehab for Mom. We selected that facility and moved Mom there after the hospital released her. The facility is ran down BUT the staff is soooo much better. My sister talked to them and we moved her there permanently. In the meantime (it’s been approximately 1.5 months) and we still don’t have the refund from The Landings at Rocky Mount Mills. To say that our experience with them has been a frustrating disappointment would be an understatement. While there were a few (less than a handful) of staff that were actually compassionate and caring, our overall experience was extremely disappointing. One of the most awful experiences was being lied to by the care manager about Mom’s fall (even after I told her that the ED called me the day it happened and that wasn’t what she told me). When leadership (from corporate down) accepts stealing, lying, and hiding instead of doing your job as the norm, all the residents and families suffer. I’ve told several people already, and will continue to, do NOT put your loved one here.
