It has taken me some time to be able to sit down and write a review about this facility for many reasons.
My mother had been admitted into this facility, initially for short term rehab, but due to dementia, it was decided that she would reside her long term.
One night I received a call from the charge nurse, who advised me that they were going to send my mother to Shands for an evaluation after what appeared to be a suicide attempt. “Appeared to be” is key, remember I mentioned the diagnosis of Dementia, and this being 9-9:30pm, my mother would have been well into sundowning.
I immediately went to the emergency department to find out what was going on. My mother was confused, however denied any suicidal ideation. The hospital, acting as they should, placed her under a Baker’s Act, and admitted her into their behavioral health facility for a psychiatric evaluation. Secondary to Dementia, it was unclear whether or not there was a positive S/I.
When it came time for Shands to discharge my mother, Parkland refused her re-admittance, stating they could not accept a patient who attempted suicide.
Obviously, this caused everyone to scramble trying to figure out what to do with my mother. I was unable to care for her safely due to working, there were no other relatives available to assist, accompanied by facility availability and insurance.
My mother was ultimately placed in a facility almost 4 hours away.
What Parkland did, was ultimately rob me of time with my mother. They also caused the one thing to happen that my mother feared the most…. Dying alone. Why did she die alone? Because I was 4 hours away when I received the call that my mother was rapidly deteriorating, and I could not get to the facility fast enough.
Parkland, I sure hope you’re proud of yourselves.
To anyone reading this, please reconsider sending your loved one to this facility. Speculation can easily steal time away from you as well.
It was all great until I had a run-in with a certain nurse reported it to directors and nothing was done staff plundered through my personal belongings stole a comprehensive note pad that I was keeping records in with names and dates and almost certain they was giving me medication to make me sleep when reported it I was told yeah we gonna get you on outta here they tell the older people there they gonna put them in jail if they don’t do what they want meaning put them in the hallway from 6 a.m.to 8 p. m. No checking if they need to be changed or not watched several pee there self until it was dripping from there wheel chairs only certain staff would do this
This place has a great community! Every day that I’m there I can hear the residents laughing and joking with each other, carrying on about sports and why last night’s game wasn’t called correctly. Even the short term residents tend to chime in on those conversations on their way to physical therapy. All in all, working at this place has it’s challenges, but the residents and their sense of community and enjoyment, not to mention their health, makes it all worth it!
Great place overall I’ve worked at many facilities over the years but here at Parklands they make me feel like I’m part of a family I enjoy coming to work everyday and I love the way everyone comes together to care for the residents I LOVE IT HERE
